Will owning ‘everything’ bring you happiness?

img_0051My friend Raj Diwan, a retired DuPont scientist, and I were discussing over dinner this evening how a person would feel if he or she were to suddenly become wealthy. Being engineers, we stretched the hypothetical situation of this “blessed” person to the “limit” and asked what if this person were to own “everything” in this planet, if not the entire universe. We then surmised that since nobody else owned anything, they would in principle not exist. So now you have this individual who owns everything but is alone in the planet.

Can you see this person being happy?  If so, how?  If not, why?

  1. This is a myth, Things or money brings happiness, a little more money will solve all my problems. The true is God created everything and God owns everything. We are trustees. We should be happy with whatever God give us.

    • A wise person said, “trust begets peace, peace begets acceptance, acceptance begets truth, truth begets love, love begets God, and God is everything!”

  2. The one word answer to this question is NO. I have read in Bible [Mathew 16:25] that, what kind of deal is to get everything you want but lose yourself?

Let’s just think about life, Life is interesting because of other boats are in the brook with you. Not able to share anything itself make life simply boring. There is nobody to talk to, share emotions or feelings in this universe, you will easily loose yourself.

Human nature is to have love and affection, owning everything will not give you happiness.

  3. Happiness is truly a mindset. The pleasures of life are meant to be enjoyed and shared with others, not controlled and owned. People think “the glass is green on the other side of the fence” but as Maya Angelou says in her poem “Hater”, “rest assured the water bill is higher there too.” People can own as many objects they want but true happiness comes from having a sense of purpose in life.

  4. There is much more to life than owning everything in the world. For some they may think otherwise. The true happiness in life comes from the balance of all aspects in life. Owning everything in the world may only meet the demands of a portion of this balance. For example you can own everything in the world, but if you lack emotion in your life happiness may be non existent. The person may be the only person in the world and they own everything the world, however they have know one to share or enjoy these possessions with.

  5. When a person owns everything on this planet and is alone that person must be the first living creature on earth. Which means that, that person has not yet succumbed to the emotions of the life. He/she would not even have realized that the entire planet is theirs. Which would imply that the person either knows only to be happy or does not even know the situation he/she is headed for. I would say this is a hypothetical implication of the situation.
When I actually think of a person suddenly become wealthy, it is sure to bring happiness for the materialistic things he/she has longed for years and could finally accomplish them. But as is the nature of the man, satisfaction of one desire would spring up another desire. When no such desire is left over by owning everything already, there is sure to be a dissatisfaction for the things beyond material. Such as love from and for others. Happiness is beyond materialism, thus real happiness dwells in a person’s state of mind irrespective of material achievements.

  6. I agree to Nikki’s comments.True happiness comes from within.Nobody in this world owns everything and the same person can own everything. In a sense, life is how we look at it.If we think that we owe everything in this worl…then the whole world is ours and vice versa.Desire does not bring happiness. There will not be a satisfaction in life.

      • True sense of happiness comes from within.being at peace with oneself and the world. It happens when your mind (intent), body (action)and spirit(conscience) vibrate in unison. A rare occurrence when you leave it to chance but can happen all the time if you consciously seek it.Happiness is natural, and it is possible to be compassionate and caring, and in tune with the sadness of the world, while still experiencing happiness in your life. This awareness might even prompt you to act in a way to help improve the situation of others – an action which may actually increase your happiness
